Power Drills
Cordless Drills use battery packs for power. New battery technology (Lithium Ion) allows cordless drills to run longer on a charge, and better maintain that charge while idle. With cordless prices decreasing, now is a great time to purchase the cordless drill you've had your eye on.

Cordless Drill Overview
Cordless drills are gaining popularity for the obvious reason - freedom from the cord. The only downside to cordless tool use is battery run time, though improvements continue to be made in that area.
Cordless drills typically use one of three battery types - Nickel cadmium (NiCd), Nickel metal hydride (NiMH), and Lithium ion (Li-Ion). Each battery type has pros and cons.

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
  • PRO - little voltage drop as it nears discharge
  • PRO - good cold weather performance
  • PRO - more life cycles (number of times it can be recharged) than NiMH
  • CON - should be fully discharged before recharging
  • CON - battery weight
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)
  • PRO - longer run time than NiCd
  • CON - poor cold weather performance
  • CON - faster discharge when tool is idle
  • CON - power drops as battery nears fully-discharged
Lithium Ion (Li-Ion)
  • PRO - Lightweight
  • PRO - low self discharge rate
  • PRO - Fast charge time
  • PRO - more life cycles (number of times it can be recharged) than NiMH or NiCad
  • PRO - better cold weather performance
  • CON - battery may be damaged if stored uncharged
  • CON - may become unstable in high heat (hot car etc.)
Alert: - Do not buy cheap (quality and price) cordless tools no matter how attractive they appear. You will be disappointed. My brand name (but cheap) low voltage cordless drill, on a full charge, will drill about 15 holes before it begins to run out of power and always self discharges when not in use. In other words, it's a piece of junk. Save your money and buy a highly rated tool!
