Drill Accessories Overview
Drill accessories are items such as drill bits, bit sets, phillips and other screw driver bits, nut drivers, keyed and keyless chucks, and drill bit sharpeners. There are more to be sure, but these are the most common accessories.
Drill Bits
So what makes a good drill bit? Titanium, Vanadium, Zirconium Nitride, Cobalt, high speed steel? Without a scientific side-by-side comparison it's hard to know for sure. For myself, I would choose high speed steel bits from a respected brand with good customer reviews. There may be more than one so look around for the best value.
I've bought a couple sets of bits coated with this or that and I don't remember them performing any better than my non-coated bits.
Proper drill speed for the material being drilled should improve bit performance and increase it's life. If you are drilling thicker metal, the use of cutting oil and/or coolant is recommended.
Bit Sharpeners
Even quality drill bits get dull with use. The question is, what's the best way to sharpen them? My preference is to use a drill sharpener such as one of the Drill Doctor
products. The reason is that I want decent results as quickly as possible and commercial drill sharpeners do the trick for me. Whether you sharpen your bits with a commercial sharpener or do it with a gauge and grinding wheel, the important thing is to make sure you do it on a regular basis.
