Drill Press Overview
The only way to drill straight holes in your work is to use a drill press. If you manage to drill perfectly straight holes with a hand-held drill more than a few times in a row, then you are in the minority. Setting bit depth and/or drilling at an angle is achieved by making the necessary adjustments using the attached gauges. A drill press will allow you to work with large bits with greater control. With a drill press, you can also change the RPM of the drill to match the type of material you will be working with.
There are cheap drill presses under $100. However, they are likely to have play in them which will allow the bit to skate or bend slightly for a less than perfect hole. The question is then, should you buy a cheap drill press if that is all you can afford? The answer is yes, if absolute precision is not required.
Drill Press Benefits:
- Drills straight holes at selected RPM.
- Set bit depth (the amount it penetrates into the work).
- Adjustable table allows you to drill at an angle.
- Greater control of large bits, spade bits, forstner bits, and others.
