Specialty Drill Overview
Using the wrong drill for a job can lead to personal injury, tool damage, or unsatisfactory results. Having said that, we all have used a standard drill for jobs it may not have been designed for, such as a driver - just insert a phillips bit and you're set. There is nothing wrong with doing that as long as the job you are attempting is within the capacity of the tool. If not, problems could occur. You should seek out the right drill designed for that task. Below is a partial list of some of the most popular specialty drills used today.
Hammer Drill
The primary application of the hammer drill is drilling into hard material such as masonary. The hammering action of the bit (in addition to the rotary motion) speed the drilling process into hard materials. Many hammer drills have a switch that allow users to turn the hammer action off so that the drill performs like a standard drill without hammer action. If that is a feature you would like, make sure it is stated in the product description before you buy.
Right Angle Drill
The primary application for a right angle drill is drilling where there is limited space - in between joists for example. Many right angle drills are fixed speed drills with settable RPM speed using a dial or switch.
Driver Drill
The primary application for driver/drills is driving screws into wood or some other material. Most have adjustable torque settings to prevent twisting the heads off screws or driving them too deep into the wood.
Most driver/drills also have a drill setting which allows the tool to perform more like a standard drill.
As driving screws requires large amounts of torque, be sure to buy a better quality drill/driver with enough power to get the job done and then some. Customer reviews are good way to get a feel for the ability of the tool.
